Nach Milroy (1999: 27) behindert die Standardisierung 'den sprachlichen Wandel, aber sie verhindert ihn nicht völlig'. Mit anderen Worten, die Standardisierung reduziert den Sprachwandel und die Variation, indem sie eine Standardform vorschlägt und einen einheitlichen Sprachgebrauch schafft. Mehrere Wissenschaftler haben die Bedeutung und den Prozess der Standardisierung diskutiert. Standardisierung bezieht sich auf den Prozess, durch den eine Sprache kodifiziert wird oder eine Varietät einer Sprache in der gesamten Sprachgemeinschaft dieser Sprache als überdialektale Norm allgemein akzeptiert wird (Ferguson, 1968: 31; Wardhough, 1992: 30). Daraus wird ersichtlich, dass die Standardisierung als ein Prozess betrachtet wird, der dazu beiträgt, eine Standardvarietät einer Sprache zu schaffen. In diesem Sinne hat Milroy (1999:173) darauf hingewiesen, dass 'Standardisierung am besten als Prozess behandelt wird', da 'alle Sprachen (außer toten Sprachen) variieren und sich in einem ständigen Zustand der Veränderung befinden'. Ferguson (1961) definiert einen Standard als eine einzige, weithin akzeptierte Norm, die mit nur geringfügigen Änderungen oder Abweichungen für alle Zwecke des Sprachgebrauchs verwendet wird. Er unterscheidet ausdrücklich zwischen diesem allgemeinen Begriff des 'Standards' und dem Grad der muttersprachlichen Alphabetisierung ('Schrift') in einer Sprachgemeinschaft.
