L’etnobotanica si occupa dello studio delle conoscenze sviluppate dalle società sul mondo vegetale, comprendendo sia il modo in cui classificano le piante sia il modo in cui le utilizzano. È probabile che l’uso delle piante medicinali come farmaci sia antico quanto l’uomo stesso, ed è più evidente nei Paesi in via di sviluppo, dove la maggior parte della popolazione povera non ha accesso ai farmaci della farmacia. L’obiettivo principale di questo studio è stato quello di valutare l’uso delle piante medicinali nei comuni che compongono la XIV Regione Amministrativa di Emater da PB, con sede nella città di Pombal. Lo studio è stato condotto utilizzando una ricerca descrittiva sul campo con un approccio qualitativo. Lo strumento di raccolta dei dati è stato un questionario precedentemente strutturato contenente domande oggettive e soggettive. I risultati hanno mostrato che oltre il 90% degli intervistati utilizza le piante medicinali per curare le malattie umane e oltre il 60% utilizza questo tipo di trattamento insieme al miele d’api. Le piante più utilizzate dagli intervistati sono state: melissa, macela, lavanda, erba santa, mastruz e menta.
