A eliminação incorrecta de pneus usados é uma das principais causas de incêndios e de riscos para a saúde em todo o mundo. Para resolver esta questão, foi realizado um estudo experimental para explorar a utilização de borracha triturada e de sucata como agregado em betão de cimento Portland, com borracha fragmentada (0-2 mm) substituindo até 10% dos agregados finos. O objetivo do estudo era avaliar os efeitos da dimensão das partículas de borracha nas propriedades do betão fresco e endurecido, incluindo a fluidez, o peso unitário, o teor de ar, a tenacidade e a resistência à compressão. Os resultados mostraram que a adição de borracha resultou numa menor resistência à compressão, mas um nível de substituição de 5-10% poderia produzir betão leve sem perda significativa de fluidez ou resistência. Em geral, o estudo destaca o potencial da utilização de borracha reciclada no betão como uma opção de eliminação segura para pneus esgotados.
