At the time of his death in 1984, William Empson was preparing and revising a collection of his essays on Shakespeare. The resulting volume, edited by David Pirie, provides a book which the literary world has wanted for over half a century. Here, in a single volume, are major readings of 'Hamlet' and 'Macbeth,' a witty and sometimes impassioned defence of Falstaff, and a new piece on the architecture of the Globe theatre and other Renaissance playhouses, in which Empson explores the problems that the design of contemporary stages posed for a working playwright; there are also essays on the narrative poems, 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream,' and the last plays. The essays demonstrate the subtlety and agility of Empson’s mind, as well as his remarkable breadth of knowledge, while the almost racy wit of his informal prose-style argues for a literary criticism which should never become solemn if it is to be truly serious.

“Some shows have warnings for strobe lights. Some have them for loud gunshots.  Some for smoke.   MISSISSIPPI GODDAMN, a new play by Jonathan Norton should have one for intensity.   Granted, anyone attending a play about civil rights pioneer Medgar Evers set in 1963 Jackson, Mississippi, should expect some strife. Blood in the battle for racial equality is no surprise, but f...

“It seems to me that for fertility in droll inventions, the perpetual outpouring of unforeseen misunderstandings, for the inexhaustible gaiety of dialogue, Feydeau’s new play is superior to everything he’s written so far. The most astonishing thing is the sureness with which everything is controlled, explained, justified, in the most extravagant buffoonery. The cross-purpose...

  • Seven Types of Ambiguity
    William Empson
Seven Types of Ambiguity was one of the most influential critical works of the 20th century and was a key foundation work in the formation of the New Criticism school. An ambiguity is represented as a puzzle to Empson. We have ambiguity when 'alternative views might be taken without sheer misreading.' Empson reads as an exploration of conflicts within the author. ...
