La obra dramática de J. M. R. Lenz hasta ahora inédita en castellano fue central en el Sturm und Drang, ese movimiento juvenil que, encabezado por Herder y Goethe, se propuso renovar la literatura alemana hacia fines del siglo XVIII y que resultó fundamental para el desarrollo del Romanticismo.
