Según la historia. Los habitantes de la Bastitania, fueron aliados de Cartago, por tanto, enemigos en sus guerras con Roma. Por ello tras la conquista de Hispania pasaron a ser un pueblo estipendiario -sometido a Roma- y por ello solo se han encontrado vestigios de su dominio en una villa estilo romano, y un busto (se supone de un Magistrado). Hubo en Basti una guarnición militar por ser su sierra rica en mineral le fue extraído por los habitantes de esta en beneficio de los romanos. Una de las vías romanas, tenía inicio en Cartagena y pasaba cerca Basti y llegaba hasta Guadix (Julia Gemella Acci) donde sí se han encontrado números vestigios de época Romana, ente ellos un anfiteatro. La novela se centra en un Magistrado romano que dignificó una población sometida. 10
