El cuento del Grial, también conocido como El libro de Perceval, es el último libro de Chrétien de Troyes, considerado como el creador de la prosa de ficción en la Europa romántica. La obra se compuso entre los años 1178 y 1181 y para muchos críticos se trata de uno de los textos más fascinantes y enigmáticos de la Edad Media, con un argumento basado en el ciclo bretón o leyenda del Rey Arturo y sus caballeros de la Mesa Redonda. Narra las aventuras de un joven caballero galés, Perceval, llamado a ser uno de los miembros más importantes de la corte del rey Arturo. El libro va precedido de una dedicatoria a Felipe de Flandes, en la que se elogia a este noble personaje por su liberalidad y sus virtudes cristianas. En el verso 9.293 a Chrétien de Troyes le sobrevino la muerte cuando estaba escribiendo; falleció antes de dar respuesta a los enigmas que había planteado, unos interrogantes que han dado origen a toda una literatura sobre el tema. El cuento del Grial tuvo un impacto considerable y aparecieron un gran número de imitadores que continuaron la historia durante los siglos XII y XIII y posteriormente durante el Romanticismo.
