作者陳葦華1964年初中畢業，因為家庭出身原因，被驅趕到廣東寶安農村當農民。她在全國知識青年上山下鄉運動之前到農村。這批人不被視為'上山下鄉知識青年群體'，也很少有人關註他們。他們的苦難經歷和群體形象，更因缺少文字記載而模糊不清。 大躍進和大饑荒後，中國農村一片蕭條，農民的生活極其艱難。 1964年作者陳葦華落戶羅田村，直至1974年離開。《遲來的春天》記錄她在農村的艱難處境，正是那批知青的真實生活的縮影。讀者可以從《遲來的春天》這本自傳體小說描寫的個人獨特的經歷，了解那一代知青的生活和心路歷程。從這個意義上看，《遲來的春天》填補了1958-1968這十年上山下鄉的一代青年的'知青文學'的空白。 《遲來的春天》的另外一個出彩之處，是作者描寫了親身從深圳逃亡到香港的過程，從而揭開了那個時代的一道傷疤。小說在她逃離深圳這裏打住，留給讀者無限的想象的空間。
