Eine Verfassung ist das oberste Gesetz eines Landes, das eine Reihe von Vorschriften enthält, die von der Regierungsform bis hin zu den Rechten und Pflichten der Bürger alles regeln. In der Geschichte der brasilianischen Verfassungen gab es einen Wechsel zwischen eher geschlossenen und eher demokratischen Regimen. Der Charakter der Regierungen wirkte sich auf die Verabschiedung der Verfassungen aus, die entweder aufgezwungen oder von den verfassungsgebenden Versammlungen angenommen wurden.
