Este libro es la traducción al español de la tercera edición de la obra Curriculum Development for Medical Education: a six-step approach, publicada por Johns Hopkins University Press. Desde su primera edición, hace 17 años, los educadores han utilizado ampliamente esta obra en las profesiones médicas en América del Norte, así como en África, Asia, Medio Oriente y América del Sur. Incluso, el libro ha sido traducido al chino y al japonés. La publicación tiene como objetivo beneficiar a los educadores médicos con el aprendizaje de un enfoque práctico, genérico y atemporal para el desarrollo curricular, que aborde las necesidades actuales y futuras. La ciencia del aprendizaje ha madurado al día de hoy, y más al asociarse con la ciencia cognitiva y la neurociencia. Las implicancias de esta comprensión del aprendizaje han modificado los enfoques de la educación. La tecnología, además de su impacto en la prestación de servicios de salud, ha motivado que la información y el aprendizaje logren ser más accesibles a nivel mundial, a través de innovaciones como los cursos en línea masivos y abiertos (CEMA) y la Academia Khan. La simulación de alta fidelidad y la realidad virtual para la educación y la capacitación también se han tornado más sólidas y eficaces. Estos son solo algunos de los cambios que impulsan el desarrollo y la renovación del currículo sin precedentes en la educación médica continua. En este contexto, los editores eligieron tres temas que son destacados en la última revisión del libro: la educación basada en competencias, que incluye los hitos y las actividades profesionales confiables (APROC) como herramientas de evaluación, la educación interprofesional y la tecnología educativa. Estos temas se han enfatizado dentro de la presentación de los seis pasos, así como en los ejemplos que se utilizaron para aplicar los conceptos. 10
