Der Begriff 'Text' hat durch den Paradigmenwechsel in der Linguistik zahlreiche Veränderungen erfahren, die zu unterschiedlichen Auffassungen geführt haben. Der Begriff Text leitet sich von dem lateinischen Verb 'textere' ab, das weben, verweben bedeutet, und von dem Substantiv 'textus', das etwas Geflochtenes oder Verwobenes ausdrückt. Das bedeutet, dass der Text eine kohärente und zusammenhängende Gesamtheit von Aussagen ist, die durch ihre Bedeutung miteinander verwoben sind.Unsere Kultur zu kennen, bedeutet zu wissen, wie man das Universum liest, das durch einen Diskurs konstruiert wird, der auf die kommunikative Absicht seiner Sprecher ausgerichtet ist. Daher ist das Lesen ein kognitiver Prozess, der eine Interaktion zwischen dem Leser, dem Text und dem Kontext herstellt (Solé, 1997).
