Jahrhunderts. Der Schimmelreiter verdichtet die Beziehung zwischen rationalem Denken und Mythos, zwischen Naturgesetz und gesellschaftlicher Ordnung. Die symbolischen Elemente – allen voran das gespenstische weiße Pferd – widersprechen dem realistischen Erzählton nicht, sondern fügen sich organisch in die Textur der Erzählung ein und erweitern die Realität um eine existenzielle, beinahe archetypische Dimension, die als charakteristisch für den poetischen Realismus gilt.
