Oliver Griebel versucht in seinem Buch, sie füreinander wieder erreichbarer zu machen. Er geht dabei von einer besonderen Idee der Ganzheitlichkeit aus, von einer Ergänzung zwischen den Dingen und der Welt. Genauer: zwischen den einzelnen Dingen, Wesen und Personen in der Welt, und einer Welt-Ordnung, die sie alle in Beziehung setzt, bestimmt, umfasst. Der Autor diskutiert, in welchem Sinn so eine allumfassende Ordnung auch Wesensmerkmale haben könnte, die traditionell Gott zugeschrieben werden, insbesondere allumfassendes Bewusstsein, Macht und Liebe. Diese Idee einer guten Ordnung der Dinge grenzt er kritisch von zwei klassischen Arten von Gottesbildern ab: dem Theismus, der Gott von der Welt trennt, und dem Pantheismus, der die Welt (und die menschliche Seele) mit Gott identifiziert. Was ist die Seele - haben wir eine? Auch auf diese Frage sucht Griebel eine ganzheitliche Antwort: eine Ergänzung zwischen Psyche und Geist (spirit), Religion und normalem Leben, Leiden und Sinn, Erlösung und Tod, der Freiheit und der Aufgabe des Menschen.
