I partecipanti alla Conferenza internazionale di Berlino (1884-1885) hanno fatto a pezzi l’Africa assegnando confini che hanno lacerato tribù, popoli ed entità territoriali, e ne hanno riuniti altri contro la loro volontà, che in genere non avevano nulla in comune tra loro: nessuna storia comune, nessuna lingua comune, nessun costume comune, nessuna cultura comune, nessun passato o modo di vivere comune, senza altri criteri che la monopolizzazione delle terre di questo continente. Lungi dal creare una coscienza nazionale come volevano gli iniziatori di questo progetto, questo fenomeno ha invece generato sentimenti di ostilità tra le tribù, portando ad antagonismi: i Kongo e le 'Gens du Haut' a Leopoldville, la guerra fratricida tra Luba e Lulua nel Kasaï, i 'katanghesi autentici' e gli 'stranieri' nel Katanga, ecc. Questi antagonismi hanno dato vita non solo ad associazioni etniche, che si sono presto trasformate in partiti politici dal sapore tribale, ma anche all’irredentismo e ad altre forme di secessione che hanno minato la nuova Repubblica del Congo, sorta dalle ceneri dello Stato indipendente del Congo.
