Chitosan ist ein Biopolymer, das aus Chitin gewonnen wird, einem der reichhaltigsten und unerschöpflichsten Stoffe der Erde. Chitin ist ein wesentliches Segment von Zellteilern in Gewächsen, den Exoskeletten von Gliederfüßern, z. B. Schalentieren, z. B. Krabben, Hummern und Garnelen, und Kriechtieren, den Radulae von Mollusken, Schnäbeln von Kopffüßern und den Größen von Fischen und Lissamphibien. Die Entdeckung von Chitin im Jahr 1811 wird Henri Braconnot zugeschrieben, während der historische Hintergrund von Chitosan auf das Jahr 1859 mit der Herstellung durch Charles Rouget zurückgeht. Der Name des Chitosans wurde jedenfalls 1894 von Felix Hoppe-Seyler vorgestellt. In Anbetracht seiner spezifischen makromolekularen Struktur, Biokompatibilität, biologischen Abbaubarkeit und anderer charakteristischer praktischer Eigenschaften hat Chitosan seit dem letzten Teil der 70er Jahre große logische und mechanische Interessen auf sich gezogen. Chitosan und seine Untergeordneten haben brauchbare Anwendungen in der Lebensmittelindustrie, im Gartenbau, in der Drogerie, in der Medizin, in der Kosmetologie, im Material- und Papiergeschäft und in der Wissenschaft. In den letzten zwanzig Jahren hat Chitosan zusätzlich viel Beachtung in verschiedenen Bereichen gefunden, zum Beispiel in der Zahnmedizin, Augenheilkunde, Biomedizin und Bio-Imaging, Cleanlin
