Dazu gehören Hochleistungsflüssigkeitschromatografie, Gaschromatografie-Massenspektrometrie, Atomabsorptionsspektroskopie, Fourier-Transformations-Infrarotspektroskopie und Dünnschichtchromatografie. Das Spektrum der verschiedenen Methoden ist wichtig, da einige Instrumente zerstörerisch sind und an einem Tatort eine Vielzahl von unbekannten Substanzen gefunden werden kann. Forensische Chemiker bevorzugen es, zunächst zerstörungsfreie Methoden anzuwenden, um Beweise zu sichern und zu ermitteln, welche zerstörenden Methoden die besten Ergebnisse liefern.
