The main character, David Cavanagh, is a forest ranger who is responsible for protecting the forest from illegal logging and hunting.David is a skilled ranger who is respected by the local community. He is also deeply connected to the forest and its wildlife. However, his job becomes more difficult when a group of wealthy hunters arrive in the area. These hunters are not interested in following the rules and regulations of the forest, and they begin to cause damage to the environment.David must navigate the challenges of his job while also dealing with personal issues. He is in love with a local woman named Mary, but their relationship is complicated by the arrival of the hunters. David must also confront his own inner demons, including a struggle with alcoholism. The novel explores themes of conservation, love, and personal growth. It is a compelling story that showcases the beauty and importance of nature, as well as the challenges faced by those who seek to protect it.1910. Hamlin Garland was born near La Crosse, Wisconsin and lived in the area for nine years before his family moved to South Dakota. As an adult he lived in major cities throughout the United States but visited his birthplace often. In 1922 he received a Pulitzer Prize for A Daughter of the Middle Border, and was also director of the American Academy of Arts and Letters for a number of years. Cavanagh begins: Lee Virginia Wetherford began her return journey into the mountain West with exultation. From the moment she opened her car-window that August morning in Nebraska the plain called to her, sustained her illusions. It was all quite as big, as tawny, as she remembered it-fit arena for the epic deeds in which her father had been a leader bold and free.
