Ce livre de recherche s’est concentré sur les mangroves éparses et frangeantes du district de Kasaragod, réparties le long de la côte et des backwaters. Les mangroves sont l’une des forêts à feuilles persistantes, des zones humides productives et biodiversifiées de la région tropicale et subtropicale. Elles protègent des inondations dues aux rivières et aux marées et agissent comme une barrière contre les typhons, les cyclones, les ouragans et les tsunamis. Le climat, le sol et l’amplitude des marées régissent la formation et la répartition des mangroves. L’urbanisation et la pression accrue de la population détruisent et réoccupent ces habitats naturels uniques par des constructions et des structures artificielles. L’extraction de sable et les déchets municipaux sont les principales causes du déclin de la densité des mangroves et de leur association dans la région. La flore était représentée par sept espèces et dominée par Avicennia officinalis, Rhizophora apiculata et Kandelia. Les technologies géospatiales sont utilisées pour cartographier les principales espèces de mangroves de la région afin d’évaluer la zone. La durabilité de ces broussailles côtières n’est possible qu’en mesurant régulièrement la superficie quantifiée.
