“En las Cartas a Nora Barnacle –corpus que se debe a su mejor biógrafo, Richard Ellmann–, fechadas en distintos tiempos en su mayor parte de 1904 y 1909, las hay también del 11 y 20, en Dublín, Trieste, Londres, lugares de la errancia de Joyce, oímos entre idas y vueltas la voz de un escritor que no fue precisamente un ‘cortesano’ (en la acepción moderna del término), una de esas excepciones que pasan una vez por siglo como un meteoro, dirigirse a la casi iletrada irlandesa de Galway que apenas si lo leyó literariamente. En todos los casos se trata de convocar, exhortar, suscitar algo en ese cuerpo que lo fascina desde su lejanía, escribirlas es un acto siempre recomenzado, el mismo Joyce lo explica en texto: ‘Hay algo obsceno y lascivo en el propio aspecto de las cartas. Su sonido es también como el propio acto: breve, brutal, irresistible y diabólico’. La analogía entre carta y acto sexual es en él un modo de rodear cierto imposible, y cada vez que cae en la tentación de suprimir toda distancia llega a la desesperación. [...] La sensibilidad y sensualidad católica de Joyce están en la brasa ardiente de estas cartas; él, que como bien se ha dicho, tenía a la teología como materia principal de sus pensamientos, al dirigirse a ella, piensa que todo puede ser dicho, incluso que no hay todo, ni el deseo ni el dolor se reprimen en tanto cosas despreciables como sucede en el puritanismo, encuentran un acento viril en este solista de las mil voces.”
