Il Brasile mantiene la sua posizione di maggior esportatore di caffè al mondo. Tra gennaio e dicembre 2016, il caffè ha rappresentato il 6,44% delle esportazioni agroalimentari brasiliane, posizionandosi al quinto posto con un fatturato di 5,47 miliardi di dollari. Le principali destinazioni sono state Germania, Stati Uniti, Italia, Giappone e Belgio. La qualità del caffè è legata a diversi fattori, come i metodi di raccolta, la lavorazione, lo stoccaggio, la tostatura, la preparazione delle bevande e, soprattutto, la composizione chimica dei chicchi, determinata da fattori ambientali, culturali e genetici. In questo senso, molte ricerche si sono concentrate sul miglioramento della gestione delle colture e sullo sviluppo di nuove cultivar geneticamente migliorate per aumentare la produttività e la resistenza a parassiti e malattie, a scapito degli studi incentrati essenzialmente sulla relazione tra tipo di cultivar e qualità della bevanda.
