First published in 1893, “Bond Slaves - The Story of a Struggle” is a social novel by Isabella Banks concerning the Luddite movement, an organisation of textile workers who destroyed machinery in protest and fear of losing their jobs to automation the early nineteenth-century England. Isabella Banks (1821–1897) was a Manchester-born English poet and novelist most famous for her book “The Manchester Man” (1876). Contents include: “A Prophecy”, “The Home on the Moorside”, “Going to Market”, “Put to the Test”, “Germs of Fate”, Josiah and his Friends”, “Haunted by Punishment”, “Storms Let Loose”, etc. Other notable works by this author include: “More than Coronets” (1881), “Caleb Booth’s Clerk: A Lancashire Story” (1878), “Glory: A Wiltshire Story, Sybilla and other Stories” (1885).
