Le comportement qui consiste à vouloir se soigner seul n’est pas récent : au XVIIIème siècle, Furetière, membre de l’Académie Française, distinguait les situations où l’on se médicine (automédication) de celles où l’on se médique (sur prescription) (Baumelou et al., 2006). L’automédication est aujourd’hui l’acte de se soigner, sans consultation médicale et avec des médicaments délivrés sans prescription médicale préalable. Les médicaments d’automédication font l’objet d’une autorisation de mise sur le marché (AMM) mais ils ne sont pas inscrits sur les listes des substances vénéneuses (I, II, stupéfiants), une ordonnance n’est donc pas nécessaire. L’automédication est un phénomène répandu en France puisque plus de sept français sur 10 y ont recours (AFIPA, 2013). Cependant, ce comportement n’est pas sans risque : mésusage (abus, erreurs de posologie...), perte de chance (prise en charge médicale retardée...), surdosage, interactions, effets indésirables et dépendance. Il est donc très important que les patients ayant recours à l’automédication s’informent auprès des professionnels de santé, à savoir le médecin ou le pharmacien.
