Diego Garcia è la più grande delle cinquantacinque isole, separate dal Regno Unito dalle sue colonie di Mauritius e Seychelles, per formare il Territorio britannico dell’Oceano Indiano nel 1965, creato esclusivamente per scopi militari, e dal 1966 è una posizione strategica degli Stati Uniti nell’Oceano Indiano.Diego Garcia, nel XXI secolo, è diventata un’installazione di grande importanza per i conflitti statunitensi in Iraq e Afghanistan, in un’area geografica con poche basi permanenti. Mauritius, da parte sua, ha avviato una campagna per sfidare il Regno Unito sullo status e la sovranità delle Chagos, che si è conclusa con un parere consultivo della Corte internazionale di giustizia nel 2019, in cui si afferma che il mantenimento dell’arcipelago è illegittimo e si chiede la fine dell’amministrazione coloniale.
