El seu primogènit, en Pau, és pres per la gelosia en néixer la seva primera germana i desenvolupa un caràcter que no és el més convenient per una relació estable entre germans, la qual es veu estroncada de manera diferent amb cadascun d’ells L’Enriqueta, que està present de cap a cap, intenta establir la normalitat, però, entre la tia Àgueda, alguns capellans i mestres, i cert pintor que apareixen en destacats moments de la trama novel·lesca, no ajuden gaire a aconseguir els propòsits que s’havien marcat amb la consagració del seu matrimoni.Amor, gelosia, fam, intriga, guerra, vencedors i vençuts, lluitadors i venuts, malalties, arts remeieres, exorcismes… i algun embolic més que farceix aquesta obra que enganxa a qui gaudeix amb la literatura i del que desprenen, com en el cas d’aquesta novel·la, les lletres tan ben harmonitzades. 10
