L’irrigazione è un fattore limitante per la produzione agricola e lo sviluppo socio-economico in molti Paesi delle regioni aride e semi-aride del mondo. Tuttavia, la sostenibilità dei sistemi irrigui richiede una gestione razionale della risorsa idrica, che in queste regioni sta diventando sempre più scarsa. L’obiettivo di questo lavoro è applicare un sistema informativo geografico (GIS) abbinato a un modello di fabbisogno idrico delle colture (CROPWATER) per la gestione dell’acqua di irrigazione in un’area irrigua e fornire ai gestori uno strumento efficiente per gestire meglio le risorse idriche in queste aree. L’area di applicazione del GIS è il perimetro irriguo del Middle Cheliff occidentale, che si trova in una regione semi-arida (pianura del Middle Cheliff). Il perimetro in questione è testimone di una notevole dinamica agraria e di una maggiore necessità di irrigazione della maggior parte delle colture.
