Zu den zahlreichen Arten der brasilianischen Flora mit interessanten biologischen Eigenschaften gehört Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil. (Aquifoliaceae), im Volksmund als Yerba Mate bekannt. Brechreizlindernde, adstringierende, medizinische und bakterientötende Eigenschaften sind beliebte Indikationen, die dieser Art zugeschrieben werden. Vor diesem Hintergrund war das Ziel dieses Buches, die antibakterielle und antimykotische Aktivität der Extrakte aus den Blättern und Zweigen zu bewerten. Das für die Herstellung der Extrakte verwendete Pflanzenmaterial wurde in Santo Ângelo/RS gesammelt, die Blätter und Zweige wurden abgetrennt, gewaschen, mazeriert, mit 70%igem Ethanol zerkleinert und anschließend gefiltert und eingedampft. Die antimikrobielle Aktivität wurde mit Hilfe der Feststoffdiffusionstechnik bewertet. Die Konzentration von 100 mg/ml zeigte die beste hemmende Wirkung gegen alle getesteten Mikroorganismen. Die erzielten Ergebnisse belegen die ausgeprägte antimykotische Aktivität der Extrakte von I. paraguariensis im Vergleich zu den Hemmungsergebnissen des kommerziellen antimykotischen Fox®, das als Vergleichsstandard verwendet wurde. Die positiven Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass diese Pflanze eine Alternative für die Bekämpfung von Mikroorganismen in der Saatgutlagerung darstellt.
