Daumenlutschen ist eine häufige Angewohnheit bei Säuglingen und Kleinkindern, die oft schon im Mutterleib beginnt und der Beruhigung oder Selbstberuhigung dient. Während es in der frühen Kindheit in der Regel harmlos ist, kann längeres Daumenlutschen über das Alter von 4 oder 5 Jahren hinaus zu Zahnproblemen führen, z. B. zu Zahnfehlstellungen oder Veränderungen des Munddachs. Psychologisch gesehen kann es bei älteren Kindern ein Zeichen von Angst oder Stress sein. Eltern sollten die Angewohnheit behutsam unterbinden, wenn sie andauert, und dabei positive Verstärkung einsetzen oder, falls nötig, professionellen Rat einholen. In den meisten Fällen überwinden Kinder das Daumenlutschen bis zur Pubertät von selbst.
