The federal government incomes, spending, andsurpluses or deficits are shown for the past 232 years. Defense department spending is shown for65 years and as a percentage of gross domestic product for Years 2001 through 2008. Direct andtotal war costs are shown in at-time dollars and in Year 2007 dollars as percentages of nominal andreal gross domestic product. The relative position of the USA is shown compared to other nationsby geographic size, population, gross domestic product, military personnel, military spending, firepower, nuclear weaponry, and other available military assets and hardware.
