Almas muertas es la más popular de las obras debidas al escritor ruso Nikolái Gógol y fue publicada en 1842. Gógol la definió como un poema épico en prosa, y tiene ciertas reminiscencias con la Divina Comedia de Dante y similitudes con El Quijote, pues el protagonista Chíchikov junto con su cochero y un criado emprenden un viaje en su troika por los amplios territorios de la vasta Rusia deteniéndose en ciudades y aldeas con la intención de comprar almas muertas.La publicación de la novela levantó algún revuelo, le valió al autor fama internacional y consolidó su reputación de gran narrador. Su protagonista, Chíchikov, pergeña el plan de comprar almas muertas esto es, la propiedad de siervos fallecidos para así poder pedir un crédito al Estado, con esta propiedad como aval, antes del siguiente censo. El relato de sus andanzas por la Rusia rural, así como de su resultado, conforman una de las cimas de la literatura en lengua rusa. En esta célebre novela se puede apreciar el talento de Gógol no sólo para la sátira, sino también para la descripción de inolvidables caracteres.
