Al faro, publicada en 1927, es la quinta novela de Virginia Woolf. Esta obra modernista relata las visitas de la familia Ramsay en dos días, uno en 1919 y otro en 1929 a la isla Skye, en Escocia. Sin embargo, el relato de estas visitas apenas tiene acción ni diálogo, pues el trasfondo de esta obra es la introspección filosófica en una prosa con cierta dificultad pues enfatiza en las emociones infantiles y en la transitoriedad de las relaciones entre los adultos, así como en los temas de pérdida, subjetividad y percepción. Para esta obra se inspiró en sus propios recuerdos familiares de las vacaciones en Godrevy, especialmente en su faro.La crítica fue muy favorable con esta obra, ya que junto con su precedente La señora Dalloway fue innovadora al utilizar recursos hasta entonces solo visto en la poesía, siguiendo así la línea de escritores como Marcel Proust y James Joyce. Es menos reconocida que estos actualmente, a pesar de su originalidad y de haber sido incluida en la revista Time en la lista de 100 mejores novelas en lengua inglesa (1923-2005).
