Em Dezembro de 2020, os Estados Unidos criaram a Academia Africana de Envolvimento Cívico (AAEC ou ACEA), um programa que visa introduzir estratégias de envolvimento cívico e proporcionar um espaço para os líderes adaptarem essas estratégias às condições locais. O programa, o primeiro do seu género, incluiu três cursos: Envolvimento Produtivo com o Governo, Inclusão e Governação com Diversidade, e Os Media como Ponte entre a Sociedade Civil e o Governo. A participação no programa permitiu que os líderes seleccionados desenvolvessem competências profissionais e adquirissem ferramentas para melhorar o envolvimento da comunidade e do governo. Esperava-se que todos os participantes desenvolvessem um Plano de Acção para o Envolvimento Cívico, no qual identificassem os passos para dar vida a um projecto de envolvimento cívico na sua respectiva comunidade ou unidade governamental. Os autores dos 60 melhores Planos de Acção foram seleccionados para participar na Cimeira da ACEA em Maio de 2022, em Accra.
