Rudyard Kipling
Abaft the Funnel is a collection of short stories and essays by Rudyard Kipling. It was first published in 1909 in the United States, although the works within it were mostly written earlier-primarily in the late 1880s and early 1890s-during Kipling’s time in India and shortly afterward. The pieces in Abaft the Funnel had originally appeared in various newspapers and periodicals, including the Civil and Military Gazette and The Pioneer, but had not previously been collected in book form. They include light fiction, travel sketches, social commentary, and journalistic observations, often written in a breezy, humorous style. The tone tends to be more informal and less polished than his better-known stories, like those in Plain Tales from the Hills or The Jungle Book.
