Perante as realidades sociopolíticas e financeiras do mundo actual, o franco CFA torna-se cada vez mais uma preocupação importante e geradora de grandes debates. Enquanto os seus promotores o aprovam, os seus detractores rejeitam-no, considerando que está na origem de todos os males de que sofre o continente africano, nomeadamente o subdesenvolvimento. Consideram que, desde a sua criação em 1945 até hoje, os países que utilizam o franco CFA não gozam efectivamente de soberania monetária. Isto explica as numerosas saídas de certos Estados da zona do Franco e amplia o problema da reforma do Franco CFA que está na ordem do dia nas zonas UEMOA e CEMAC. No entanto, com a aceleração do processo de integração regional em África, que visa harmonizar as políticas entre os Estados, é necessário perguntar se esta reforma é uma vantagem ou um inconveniente para a integração regional do continente.
