No século V a.C., Hipócrates utilizou a palavra 'podagra' para designar a gota, que era originalmente a palavra francesa 'podagre' e se referia à doença ou ao seu portador. O termo era descritivo. Em grego, significa 'apanhado pelo pé', evocando a armadilha em que o animal é capturado (agra significa caçar ou apanhar). Foi no século IX que o termo gota foi introduzido na linguagem popular. Rheuma (reumatismo ou descarga) era comparado a um humor nocivo destilado 'gota a gota' nas articulações e nos órgãos. O seu significado foi reduzido no século XV, com a palavra gota a corresponder à doença conhecida como podagre. Durante o Renascimento, Ambroise Paré utilizou o termo 'gota' em vez de podagre. Existem muitas descrições históricas da doença, mas uma das mais importantes é o tratado sobre podagra de Thomas Sydenham, o Hipócrates inglês, em 1683. A gota foi também apelidada de 'a doença dos reis'. De Carlos Magno a Luís XIV, abateu-se sobre alguns dos maiores nomes da história. No século XIX, era considerada responsável por todos os males. A gota está longe de ser uma coisa do passado, especialmente em África.
