1984 es una novela política de ficción distópica publicada en 1949 cuyo personaje principal, Winston Smith, decide rebelarse ante un gobierno totalitario controlado por el Gran Hermano, que vigila todos y cada uno de los movimientos de los ciudadanos y que es capaz de castigar incluso a quien delinque con el pensamiento. Winston Smith trata de escapar de esta tiranía omnipresente y se une a la Hermandad, liderada por O’Brien, aunque poco a poco va comprendiendo que esta organización no es lo que aparenta y que la rebelión puede ser un objetivo inalcanzable. 1984 es una de las obras más rompedoras e inquietantes del siglo XX por su magnífico análisis del poder y de las relaciones y dependencias que este crea en los individudos. Además, popularizó los conceptos del omnipresente y vigilante Gran Hermano, la policía del Pensamiento o la neolengua, basada en la idea de que aquello que no forma parte del idioma no puede ser pensado.
