This book has more than a hundred different ideas for creative activities to do with children aged between three and five years, although younger and older children can enjoy many of these open-ended activities at their own level. Most of the materials used can be recycled from everyday household objects and supermarket supplies. For some of the materials needed can be gathered from the garden or park. There are themes, and some overlap, but they are in no particular order except for the very last activity in the book that uses the story of The Great Big Enormous Turnip for inspiration. All the activities have been tried and tested as is evidenced by the wealth of photographs that illustrate all the activities. The themes include messy play with water, home-made gloop, paint and glue; nature play using plants, leaves, pots, stones, seeds and twigs; recycle play using yoghurt pots, plastic bottles and tubs, boxes, magazines, scrap paper and old cards; imaginative play telling bear stories and specific stories including Jack and the Beanstalk, The Great Big Enormous Turnip and Old MacDonald’s Farm. Within these larger themes are topic such as: balancing, vehicles with wheels, mobiles and spinners, fish, outer space, Spring, and spots and stripes.
